Immaculate Concepcion Catholic Church – Santa Cruz

The Immaculate Conception Parish Church commonly known as Santa Cruz Church is a Roman Catholic church along Pedro Guevarra Street, Poblacion, Santa Cruz, Laguna, Philippines.

Santa Cruz was formerly annexed (or visita) of Lumban and became an independent parish under the advocacy of the Immaculate Conception in 1602 with Father Gabriel de Castro as priest. Due to sanitary problems in the original location, the church was transferred in 1608 in its present location and built the present church under the direction of Father Antonio de la Llave. Father Miguel Perciva added a transept under his direction in 1672. The church was later renovated by building a nave, convent and remodeling of the five altars by Father Juan Marzon in 1850. The church was destroyed by fire in January 28, 1945 during the Liberation. It was reconstructed in 1948 under Father Mariano Limjuco.

Besides the devotion to the Virgin Mary, an image of the Holy Guardian Angel, whose devotion started in 1678 by Fernando de la Concepcion, was venerated in Santa Cruz. After being housed at Pila, the infirmary of the Franciscan religious was transferred to Pila on July 13, 1674.

Iglesia Filipina Independiete – Santa Cruz

Sta. Cruz or Holy Cross is the capital of the province of Laguna. It is the seat town of the governor where his symbolic magnificent old capitol is located. It’s a very old town and was even formerly just a barrio of Lumban, Laguna in the 16th century. It was proclaimed as a town when the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was founded 1602. Inhabitants of this town were very religious. The church is very old but still standing firm. During the rise against the “prayle” of the local priests, the formation of the Aglipayan Church or the Philippine Independent Church began, which was instigated by the merchant Isabelo delos Reyes and Fr. Gregorio Aglipay in Plaza Miranda, Quiapo, Manila in August 3, 1902. Aglipay was proclaimed as Supreme Bishop and some priests sided with him overthrowing the authority of the Spanish clergy, breaking themselves even from under the Pope in Rome. The archives tell us that the movement spread so fast that in Sta. Cruz, Don Vicente Reyes, Pablo Gullatco, Vicente Rebettar and some priests continued the movement. They bought a lot beside Vicente Reyes house, a grocery store and stock house of sugar and prepared it to build a church. Prominent people and devotees of Mahal na Senior Santo Sepulcro and Virgin Mary of Maulawin helped the construction of the Church and in June 4, 1913, it was blessed and dedicated. That day was an important day, the most memorable day, the most unusual day where so many people flocked to the town from nowhere ( bumaha ng tao).
Thousands of people joined the procession and was accompanied by 13 music bands that enlivened the celebration. Bishop Aglipay was the guest speaker and the former December 8 fiesta was replaced by this June 4 assembly. More IFI churches was built particularly in the towns of Rizal, Paete and Luisiana respectively.
